A Tourist Participatory Design for Boosting the Nighttime Cultural Tourism

Abstract

Nighttime cultural tourism has been a research spotlight for night economic development. Despite the earlier start, China’s researchers did not pay enough attention to it until 2019, and the study in most areas is still in its infancy. In China, the existing night cultural tourism services suffer from serious homogeneity, insufficient cultural penetration, and a lack of innovation. To address these issues, we choose resident tourists as a breakthrough since they are the audience of night cultural tourism services as well as the experiencers and reconstructors of the cultural field in the nighttime cultural tourism scene. In this paper, we examine the benefits of using public participatory design to improve nighttime cultural tourism services and then propose a participatory design model based on participant dimensions, background indicators, ISO evaluation standards, participation forms, and principles of nighttime cultural tourism. In particular, we construct a sample participatory design scene for nighttime cultural tourism to demonstrate how our design can overcome the two obstacles that hinder users from fully understanding the design background and content and accurately expressing design opinions in the process of participatory design.
