Abstract

The chapter explores the inter-related issues in the escalating violence in Nigeria’s oil-rich Niger Delta since the country’s return to democratic rule in May 1999. In spite of the promises electoral democracy stands for, in 1999, 2003, and 2007, at the local, state, and federal levels, the Niger Delta has witnessed unprecedented levels of disillusionment, violence, and insecurity that is linked to the inequities and contradictions of "the paradox of plenty.".
