Abstract

The role of biochar has been intensified currently into various fields due to its advanced physicochemical features. Their role has currently extended many advanced research aspects like energy storage, fuel cells, transportation activities, and membrane development. However, the synthesis of biochar for their extended applications requires specific reaction conditions, which are sometimes compromised during synthesis. Additionally, due to application in smaller grinded powder form, their separations and recyclability are always a matter of concern. To overcome these obstacles for the smooth application, the modifications of biochar into the nanocomposites would be a viable and application-oriented strategy. The preparations of biochar nanocomposites through the impregnation of various chemical entities (nanometal/metal oxides, hydroxides, magnetic biochar, or other functional groups) will enhance their sorption potential. This chapter will present an overview about the comparison of the pristine biochar with the biochar-based nanocomposites along with summarizing the ongoing research on this field. Further, the chapter will discuss the potential of both pristine biochar and their nanocomposites in various applications and finally finding of the current loopholes that must be addressed in future research experiments.
